Narcissism is a personality disorder that is characterized by an excessive sense of self-importance, a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. There are two primary types of narcissism: exhibitionist and covert. Understanding the differences between the two can help you recognize and address these tendencies in yourself or others.

Exhibitionist Narcissist

Exhibitionist narcissists are those who are more visible and overt in their behavior.

They often seek out attention and praise, and they may go to great lengths to obtain it. They may be charismatic, charming, and persuasive. They are often highly successful in their careers and may have a large social network.

Exhibitionist narcissists may come across as confident and self-assured, but they can also be aggressive and demanding, and they may struggle with feelings of insecurity and vulnerability.

Covert Narcissist

Covert narcissists, on the other hand, are less visible and more subtle in their behavior.

They may appear shy or introverted, and they may go to great lengths to hide their true feelings and intentions. They may be highly sensitive to criticism or rejection and may avoid situations where they might be exposed.

Covert narcissists may struggle with feelings of inadequacy and may use manipulation or passive-aggressive behavior to control others. They may also have a deep sense of entitlement and may feel that others owe them something.

In both cases, narcissism can be damaging to relationships and personal growth.

If you or someone you know is struggling with narcissism, seeking professional help can be beneficial. A therapist can help you develop coping strategies and address underlying issues that may be contributing to your narcissistic tendencies. It’s important to remember that recovery from narcissism is possible with the right support and commitment.
